Bulgaria Bulgaria

Bulgaria ranks 46th in this year’s CCPI, down 10 spots from the previous year and among the low-performing countries. In the GHG Emissions, Energy Use, and Climate Policy categories, Bulgaria receives a low rating, while it earns a medium for Renewable Energy.

Bulgaria lacks 2030 and 2050 carbon emissions targets. Its coal power phase-out is planned for 2038, which is not in line with other EU countries’ aims to phase-out coal by 2030.

Bulgaria’s coal plants are among the worst polluters in Europe

The CCPI climate experts see a slight improvement in faster take-up of renewable energy, which is driven by solar power. Bulgaria’s support for nuclear and gas being included in the EU taxonomy has diverted funds from renewable energy deployment.

The experts’ main demand is a more ambitious coal phase-out plan. The coal power plants in Bulgaria are old and some of the most heavily polluting in Europe. The country also needs to plan a greenhouse gas emissions reduction target.
