France France

France is ranked 37th in this year’s CCPI, down nine ranks and among the low-performing countries.

The country receives a medium in the Climate Policy and GHG Emissions categories, and a low in Renewable Energy and Energy Use.

Data analysis shows the country has high per capita energy consumption. France’s renewable energy target needs to be three times higher to be aligned with the Paris Agreement. After failing to meet its binding 2020 renewable energy target, France introduced the Renewable Energy Acceleration Bill, a legislative package focused on offshore wind energy production.

France extended the life of two remaining coal plants

France led efforts to have nuclear energy classified as sustainable in the EU taxonomy. The country has extended the life of its two remaining coal plants, effectively delaying its coal exit from 2023 to 2024.

On a positive note, President Emmanuel Macron announced in September that France plans to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels from 60% to 40% by 2030. He also announced plans to make the leasing of electric vehicles more accessible.
